Girls' Golf Wins First-Ever Essex County Championship

The Newark Academy girls’ golf team made history on Tuesday morning by winning the first-ever girls’ golf Essex County Championship. The match was a duel match, additionally serving as the Bi-County Conference Championship. The Bi-County Conference consists of the member schools of both the Super Essex Conference and the Union County Conference. In this portion of the scoring, Newark Academy placed second.

The Minutemen finished with a score of 353, beating out second-place finisher Millburn by a stroke (354) for the Essex County title. Kent Place finished first overall to take home the Bi-County Conference title with a score of 342. Newark Academy sophomore Sophia Ha led the Minutemen with a 72, which placed her at second overall on the individual level. Freshman Anya Karyekar came in second for the Minutemen shooting an 85, followed by Freshman Anya Balakumaran (91), senior Larisa Basile (105) and sophomore Kate Wise (112).

Newark Academy is off to its strongest start in school history, with a current regular season record of 12-2. The Minutemen hope to continue their success and make a run in the state tournament with the sectional playoff scheduled for May 6.
