Middle School Sports Fall Recap

As we head deeper into the fall season, we wanted to take a look back on a very memorable middle school fall sports season.

It was a monumental season for a few of our Minutemen teams as some brought home championship titles. Both the boys' soccer team and girls' tennis team won the Middle School Athletic Championships. The field hockey team made it to the final where they fell to MKA 2 to 1.

Looking back, our coaches each provided us with a few words to recap the fall.

Girls’ Tennis
“The Middle School girls team had a fantastic season, with a final 7-2 record. In the final week of the season, the girls beat both MKA (5-0) and Pingry (5-0) to win the MSAC tournament. Beyond numbers and results, I’m so proud of the team for sticking through some tough matches and building such strong partnerships on the court. Thank you to captains Krisha Chhabra and Lily Schonbraun for their leadership, and to the whole team for their tenacity, spirit, and focus on the game.” - Coach Reed

Boys’ Soccer
“The MS boys A soccer team had a fantastic season. They went the distance in the post-season to win the championship. They defeated Pingry 2-1 in an exciting final. All the boys made significant contributions to the team’s success” - Coach Caldwell

Field Hockey
“The 2021 NAFH team finished the season with a record of 4-4, scoring 11 goals this season. This is more wins and goals than the team has scored in the past five seasons- so it bodes well for the future! Highlights include wins over Kent Place, Pingry, Far Brook, and Morristown Beard. The team made it to the finals of the MSAC Tournament but fell to MKA after overtime, penalty stroke, and sudden victory penalty strokes in a valiant fight to the end! Congrats on a great season NAFH!!” - Coach Bona and Coach Eggert

Girls’ Soccer
“Although the team only registered one win this season, the record does not reflect the effort, positivity or team spirit of this group. The team really came together and steadily improved over the course of the season. There was a positive tone that made each practice and game fun for everyone. Most notably, the team opened their season by playing Morristown Beard where we lost 1-4. When we played them a second time later into the season, we beat them 3-1!” - Coach Torson and Coach Ledezma

Cross Country
“MSXC had a wonderful season this year -- they literally ran rain or shine! Highlights this season included a big win for Boys XC in the season opener against Gill St. Bernards, Morristown Beard and MKA. Girls had a competitive first place win against Peck and Rutgers Prep and the Boys and Girls teams combined brought home 3 trophy wins in Pingry's Ed Scott Invitational. All that and the team saw progress in all their timed runs while maintaining an extreme amount of fun. GO NAXC!” - Coach Fernandez

Football
“In our inaugural interscholastic flag football campaign, the Minutemen finished with a 1-1 record. We began our season on the road against old rivals MKA. An injury to the recently named starting quarterback left the team looking to their seventh grade, rookie, back up to captain the ship in the rivalry game. Despite a strong effort defensively and regularly moving the ball on offense the Minutemen fell to the Cougars 13-6. The team played their second game in the friendly confines of Coursen Field. WIth strong efforts across the board and contributions from players across all grade levels the Minutemen carried the day winning 26-13 in regulation. Following the cessation of the interscholastic season the Minutemen concluded their year with an intersquad tournament that saw the Nate Tefari captained "Nice Guys" carry home the team trophy”. -Coach Pursell and Coach Blomn

The winter season is upon us and the Newark Academy Minutemen look to continue their habits of excellence across all sports and levels.
