The Newark Academy boys’ tennis team took home the last ever Tournament of Champions title on Thursday afternoon. The Minutemen were up against the number two seeded Bears of East Brunswick. East Brunswick entered the final with a 23-1 record, with their only loss being to Greens Farms Academy of Connecticut in the semi-final round of the Newark Academy Tennis Invitational. In the semi-final round of the T of C, the Bears bested number four Pingry to make it to the final and face the Minutemen.

Led by the Kotzen brothers at first and third singles (Nick and Andrew), Newark Academy got out to an early 2-0 lead, however, it was not going to be an easy day for the rest of the squad. Josh Mandelbaum pushed through a back injury to win a tight battle at second doubles which was ultimately the clinching point for the Minutemen. Newark Academy was happy to have clinched the singles points because they ended up dropping both doubles points to finish the day 3-2.

This win gave Newark Academy its 15th T of C title, out of the 29 years that it has been held. The Minutemen end this season with a perfect 24-0 record and they look forward to sending a few of their players to the singles championship this weekend.
