After an exceptional 2021 season that capped off with the program’s first-ever state championship title, the Newark Academy varsity girls’ volleyball team is looking forward to another competitive season. Last fall, the Minutemen finished with a 20-7 record, ending with a loss to Paul VI in the preliminary round of the Tournament of Champions. Head Coach Bella Galvez is entering her seventh year as head coach and is aiming to defend their state championship title this season. The team will be led by captains Alyssa Cai ’23 and Andrea Yan ’23.

Newark Academy will compete in the American Division of the Super Essex Conference for the 2022 season. Conference competitors include Livingston, Verona, Montclair Kimberley Academy, Caldwell, Mount Saint Dominic and Millburn.

Although the Minutemen will be without recent graduate and All-SEC American Division Honorable Mention Fiona Tillyer ’22, this season’s outlook is bright as the team returns numerous All-Conference selections. This includes senior 2021 All-SEC American Division second team selection Chiara Maselli ’23 and 2021 All-SEC American Division Honorable Mention Kiki Afolabi ’23.

The volleyball season kicks off at Caldwell High School on September 8 at 4 p.m. for the team’s first conference matchup.
