Newark Academy | 9/1/2022

Third-year boys’ varsity soccer Head Coach Hernando Santamaria, and captains Alex Atlas ‘23 and Alejandro Lorenzo ‘23, are determined to lead the team to a successful 2022 season. The team finished last season with a 9-11-2 record and an exciting run in the state tournament. The Minutemen’s season came to a close in a heartbreaking 4-3 shootout loss to Gill Saint Bernard’s in the state sectional final. Gill went on to win the Non-Public B final title.

In 2021, the Minutemen had six student-athletes named to All-Super Essex Conference Liberty divisional teams and three named to All-State North Private Sectional teams. Recent key graduates for the Minutemen include goalkeeper Max Alter ‘22 and midfielder Zach Strain ‘22.

Newark Academy is looking to be competitive in the Liberty division in the Super Essex Conference this year. Conference competitors include Cedar Grove, Millburn, Montclair Kimberly Academy, Irvington, Glen Ridge, Bloomfield and Caldwell. Key returners include Alex, All-SEC Liberty second team and All-State North Private Sectional second team; Alejandro, All-SEC Liberty second team; Nicholas Sikellis ’24 and Michael Russo ’24, All-SEC Liberty Honorable Mentions.

Newark Academy will open their season on Friday, September 9 when they host Cedar Grove at 4 p.m. on Kacur Field.
