Newark Academy opened up the morning by dominating Princeton Day in straight sets, 5-0. On the other side of the bracket, Holy Angels topped Montgomery 3-2.
The Minutemen looked forward to the challenge of Holy Angels at 2 p.m. for the championship match. At first singles, Newark Academy’s Ayanna Varma ’25 fell to Erin Ha, 6-2 and 6-3. The Minutemen were able to win at second singles, with Joanna Yu '25 dominating Norah Park of Holy Angels 6-1 and 7-5. At third singles, Mallika Reddy '23 defeated Alexandria Darmanin in a comeback victory, 3-6, 6-0 and 6-3. Moving on to first doubles, Holy Angels’ Stephanie Chan and Ella Oaten edged Hilary Adelman '23 and Molly Egan '24, 6-3 and 6-4. Newark Academy sealed their victory over Holy Angels with a second doubles win from Siyona Bordia '25 and Sarah Wang '25 over Evangeline Cho and Mia Custodio, 4-6, 6-2 and 6-3.
With this win, the Minutemen remain undefeated on the season with a 6-0 record. Newark Academy is ranked #3 in the Essex County Tournament where they are slated to face #14, Cedar Grove, on Tuesday, September 20 at 9:15 a.m. at Branch Brook Park.
