Boys' Fencing 2022 Season Preview

The Newark Academy boys’ fencing team is planning on having another successful season this year. Coming off an 11-1 season, the team hopes to defend its numerous championship titles. Led by fifth-year Head Coach Daniel Bailey-Yavonditte (Coach “B-Y”), the Minutemen were State and District Champions last season. Their only loss was a one-point battle to Ramapo, 14-13.

The team will have to navigate the loss of recent graduates and NJ.com All-State First Team - Sabre and NJIFA All-State First Team - Sabre selection Konrad Czyzewski ’22 and NJ.com All-State First Team - Foil and NJIFA All-State First Team - Foil selection Michael Pyo ’22. Both Konrad and Michael went on to fence at the collegiate level, with Konrad fencing at Notre Dame and Michael fencing at Haverford College.

This year, the team will be led by captain William Tsai ’23, captain and NJ.com All-State Third Team - Epee and NJIFA All-State Second Team - Epee selection Torata Mishima ’23 and squad captain and NJ.com All-State First Team - Sabre and NJIFA All-State
Second Team - Sabre selection Andrew Deng ’24. The team is also happy to return NJ.com All-State Second Team - Epee selection Hudson Lee ’24.

Newark Academy will host Montclair on Friday, December 16 at 4:15 p.m. for their home and season opener.
