The Newark Academy Minutemen girls' soccer team is gearing up for the 2024 season with a fresh outlook and new leadership. After a challenging 2023 season with a 2-14-1 record, the team, led by returning Head Coach Scott Rowling, is looking to capitalize on its opportunities and make strides in the Super Essex Conference Liberty Division.
2023 Season Recap
The 2023 season was a challenge, as Newark Academy faced tough competition throughout the year. However, the team is determined to build on last year’s experiences and improve their performance.
Major Losses
The team will miss the contributions of captains Larissa Basile ‘24, Olivia Palker ‘24 and Mia Heinold ‘24, who was an All-SEC American Division and All-Essex County Honorable Mention.
Key Returners
The Minutemen have some key players returning who are expected to make a significant impact on the field this season. Cami Gallagher ‘25, an All-SEC American Division Second Team, All-Essex County Second Team and All-Prep Honorable Mention selection, will be a central figure for the team. Olivia Goransson ‘26, an All-SEC American Division Honorable Mention, is also expected to contribute strongly to the team’s success. This season the team will be led by captains Cami Gallagher, Gracie Kelly ‘25 and Sienna Murphy ‘25.
Season Outlook
This season, Newark Academy will compete in the Super Essex Conference Liberty Division. The move to this division follows a tough season last year, but it offers a chance for the Minutemen to be more competitive and potentially move back up into the American Division. The team will face off against Verona, Mount Saint Dominic, Cedar Grove, Glen Ridge and East Side, among others.
The season opener is scheduled for September 4 at 4 p.m. at home against Gill.
