The Newark Academy Minutemen are gearing up for another exciting season as they prepare to defend their Super Essex Conference Liberty Division title. With a strong performance last year, culminating in a divisional championship—the first in a decade—the team, led by Head Coach Hernando Santamaria, has set the bar high for the 2024 season.
2023 Season Recap
In 2023, the Minutemen finished with an impressive 13-6 record and secured the Super Essex Conference Liberty Division title by defeating Glen Ridge 4-2. Key seniors from last year, including Nick Sikellis, James Morris and Mikey Russo, made significant impacts, earning multiple accolades such as All-Super Essex Conference (SEC) and All-Essex County Soccer Coaches Association honors. The loss of these standout players, along with recent graduates James Bradstock and Damian Correa, presents a challenge for the team.
New Leadership and Key Returners
This season, the team will be led by captains Jacob Cole ‘25, Jeffrey Kunzweiler ‘25, and Benedikt Guth ‘25. Cole, a key returner who earned numerous accolades last season, will be pivotal in filling the gaps left by last year’s graduates. Kunzweiler, who earned All-SEC Honorable Mention, will provide essential experience and leadership.
Season Outlook
The Minutemen will compete in the Super Essex Conference Liberty Division against Columbia, West Essex, Bloomfield, Montclair Kimberley Academy and Glen Ridge. The season opener is set for Wednesday, September 4, at Belleville at 4 pm.
