The Newark Academy Minutemen volleyball team is preparing for the 2024 season with a new head coach and a roster ready to build on last year's experiences.

2023 Season Recap
After finishing with a 5-12 record in 2023, the team is looking to make a strong comeback under the guidance of Amar Sonnylal, who steps up as head coach following a season as the junior varsity coach.

Major Losses
Newark Academy will be missing key graduates from last year. Reina Hassell ‘24, an All-Super Essex Conference (SEC) American Division Honorable Mention and Amherst College commit, along with Abi Pacheco ‘24, an All-SEC American Division Honorable Mention, will not be returning.

Key Returners
Despite these losses, the Minutemen have valuable talent returning. Lea Adams ‘25, an All-SEC American Division Second Team selection and All-Prep Honorable Mention, will be a key player for the team.

Season Outlook
Under the leadership of first-year Head Coach Amar Sonnylal, Newark Academy will compete in the Super Essex Conference American Division. The Minutemen will face strong opponents including Livingston, Verona, Millburn, Mount Saint Dominic, and Montclair Kimberley Academy. The season opener is set for Thursday, September 12, at 4 p.m. at home against Millburn.
