Things are starting to get back to normal on the pitch in New Jersey. This year has featured some amazing performances across the board through the first month. That includes some crazy individual efforts as well as some impressive team turnarounds. We’ve picked out a frontrunner and contenders in seven categories for the 2021 edition of NJ.com’s midseason awards. Scroll through the post below to get a look at each category, including forward, midfielder, defender, goalkeeper, rookie, comeback player and coach of the year. Forward of the Year Summer Reimet, Ocean City, Sr. The Monmouth commit leads the state with 36 goals this season and she is the focal point of a program that is on a 41-game unbeaten streak. Reimet introduced herself to the state two years ago when she led Ocean City with 35 goals. That team shocked New Jersey when its offense lit up Ramapo in the Group 3 final and led the Red Raiders to their first-ever state championship. Ocean City has been a powerhouse ever since and Reimet has continued to light it up. The senior has serious speed and she is the state’s highest active career scorer with 105 goals. Cochran scored the game-tying goal in a 2-1 win over Immaculate Heart. She also picked up a key assist in a 3-2 victory against Ridgewood. The senior has 13 goals and seven assists overall for Ramapo. New Hampshire commit Lily Johnson has also been a key offensive piece for the Raiders. This team is one of the best in the state and Ramapo is hoping to win a Bergen County and Group 3 state title in 2021. In her natural position, the Tennessee commit is an elite defender and makes the Raiders one of the hardest teams in the state to score against. When Scotch Plains-Fanwood needs her to, Klurman has also proven that she can step up and hit game-changing shots. The senior leads the team this fall with nine goals and three assists. Scotch Plains-Fanwood has been getting better throughout the season and Klurman is the tone-setter. That’s a change for a program that has been known for its explosive offense for nearly a decade. Grimm has made massive saves this fall and her ability to lead the defense along with her twin sister, Barbara, and Monmouth commit Clara Ford helps set Shore apart. Grimm just came up with 10 saves in a 1-1 draw with Holmdel. That performance added to a resume that includes strong games against Red Bank Catholic, Rumson-Fair Haven, St. John Vianney and Wall. Her ability to score is special and adding her to the mix along with star midfielder Melina Rebimbas makes Rutgers Prep hard to stop. The Argonauts have the most productive offense in the state and Halpern is a big reason why. The freshman has 20 goals and 11 assists already this fall. And what’s scary about that is Halpern is still working on her touch. There’s still another level that the explosive rookie is capable of reaching. The South Carolina commit is back now and she’s one of the elite defensive players in the state. Chico also has the ability to strike when she moves up to the offensive third. The senior had an assist in a win over Immaculate Heart and scored a goal in a tight win over Ridgewood. Chico’s presence on the field makes Ramapo one of the most skilled teams in the state and the Raiders will be hard to beat. Other candidates Shae Allen, Piscataway, Jr. Elaina Grenz, River Dell, Sr. Melina Rebimbas, Rutgers Prep, Jr. Arianna Silva, DePaul, Sr. Aditi Singh, West Windsor-Plainsboro North, Jr. Coach of the Year Heather Bailey, St. John Vianney St. John Vianney is on an 11-game unbeaten streak and that includes some gutsy performances against the better teams in the Shore Conference. The Lancers made a huge statement when it beat Red Bank Catholic earlier this season and added to the narrative with victories over Shore and Wall. This team well -coached and plays solid across the board. St. John Vianney has played to a pair of scoreless ties, and the Lancers have also brought home five one-goal wins this fall. There are big games coming up soon and this team will be ready. St. John Vianney has battled all year and won’t quit any time soon.
