BOYS' TRACK TEAM WINS STATE SECTIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

The Newark Academy boys’ and girls’ track teams competed at the state sectional championship and the group championships on Friday and Saturday. Held at Middletown North High School, the event spanned over two days and resulted in numerous successes for the Minutemen. The boys’ track team was able to place first in the Non-Public B North Sectional championship. The team then placed second in the Group championship with a score of 79, coming in behind first place finisher St. Rose (94). In addition to their top team finishes, multiple relays and individuals qualified for the Meet of Champions taking place next week. The team’s qualifying relays include the 4x100 meter relay (Ewan Jack, Jaeden Henry, Jelani Dean, and Bryce Rhodeman), the 4x800 meter relay (Cameron Wright, Pierce Malloy, Luka Opacic Rodrigues, and Clark Wagner), and the 4x400 meter relay (Cameron Wright, Luka Loncar, Clark Wagner, and Kayin Davis). The individuals that qualified for the M of C include Harold Fullilove (high jump), LJ Hines (110 high hurdles), Matthew Herbert (pole vault), Tom Pesquin (110 high hurdles), and Ewan Jack (long jump).

After some strong performances on the girls’ side, Newark Academy will also be sending some of its female team members to the Meet of Champions next week. This includes 4x100 meter relay (Tiana Evans, Marie Kung, Amaani Jetley, Selah Dungey) and for individuals, Tess Kesler (pole vault) and Selah Dungey (high jump/long jump). The girls finished 8th in the group championship with a final score of 37.

The Minutemen are looking forward to sending their top competitors to the Meet of Champions next Saturday, June 18 at Franklin High School in Somerset.
