The Newark Academy boys’ tennis team defended their state championship title for the 13th year in a row with a whopping 5-0 win over Christian Brothers Academy (CBA) on Friday afternoon. This is the 30th NJSIAA state championship for the Minutemen. Over the course of the program’s history, it has amassed 30 conference, 25 county, 30 state and 15 Tournament of Champions titles (the final TOC was played in 2022).

In order to reach the state group final, The Minutemen bested Pingry 4-1 in the state sectional final (Non-Public North), for the second year in a row and to capture their 13th straight sectional title.

It was a highly decorated season for the Minutemen, as the winning was kicked off with an Essex County Tournament win in mid-April. Newark Academy bested Millburn in the final to bring home the victory. The Minutemen finished the season with a perfect 20-0 regular season record. Two Newark Academy seniors, Andrew Kotzen and Joshua Mandelbaum, were named National High School Tennis All-Americans for the 2023-2024 school year. Both will continue their tennis careers at the Division I level next year. Kotzen will be heading to Columbia University to join his two older brothers and NA alumni, while Mandelbaum will be heading to Rice University.

Aside from the graduation of three starters from the lineup, the Minutemen boast a strong and young returning lineup and hope to continue their history of success next season.
