The Newark Academy boys’ basketball team looks forward to kicking off their season against Livingston for a Super Essex Conference (SEC) Independence matchup in hopes of redemption after suffering a five-point defeat to them last season. Under the lead of fifth-year head coach Deon Mingo, the Minutemen are coming off an 11-14 2021-2022 season.

The team was led last season by 1,000-point scorer and All-SEC First Team and Prep B First Team selection, Chase Clarke ’22, who has gone on to continue his basketball career at Bentley University. Another loss for the Minutemen includes All-SEC Honorable Mention, Jackson Derman ’22.

This year, the Minutemen will be led by captain Deon Mingo Jr. ’23 and All-SEC Honorable Mention, Dylan Wapner ’24.

Newark Academy will be competing in the SEC Independence division this season. Competitors will include Livingston, Science Park, Nutley, West Orange, Shabazz, Newark Collegiate and Barringer. The Minutemen will open on December 16 at 4:15 p.m. at home against Livingston. JV will follow at 5:45 p.m.
