As the summer days wane and the anticipation for fall sports builds, the Newark Academy Varsity Field Hockey team is gearing up for a season of redemption under the guidance of Head Coach Noelle Shirey.

The 2022 season was a challenging one for NA, culminating in a record of 2-12-1. As the team prepares for the 2023 season, the captaincy remains to be determined. These leaders will play a vital role in guiding their teammates both on and off the field, providing inspiration and motivation throughout the season.

Notably, the graduation of key selections from the previous year presents both challenges and opportunities for the team. Aakriti Caprihan ‘23 (All-Super Essex Conference (SEC) Liberty Division and Essex/Union Blue Division selection and captain), along with Anusha Thapa ‘23 (All-SEC Liberty Division and Essex/Union Blue Division selection and captain), leave a void that must be filled. Additionally, the Minutemen bid farewell to Kaitlyn Chee ‘23 (All-SEC Liberty Division Honorable Mention and Essex/Union Blue Division second team), Pamela Davidson ‘23 (All-SEC Liberty Division Honorable Mention, Essex/Union Blue Division Honorable Mention selection and captain) and Claire Waskow ‘23 (Essex/Union Blue Division Honorable Mention).

However, amidst these losses, there is reason for optimism. The team can rely on the presence of key returner Olivia Croshaw ‘24, who has showcased her talent as a First Team All-SEC Liberty Division, Essex/Union Blue Division and All-Prep team selection, as well as other rising leaders within the program.

Competing in the Essex/Union Blue Division against opponents such as Cranford, Governor Livingston, Mount Saint Dominic, Union, Verona and Caldwell, as well as the SEC Liberty Division, the Minutemen are poised to face challenging matchups throughout the season.

The season will open on Thursday, September 7 when the Minutemen head to Union for a 4 pm start.
