The Newark Academy varsity girls' tennis team has started the season strong, heading into the weekend with a 3-0 record. While the Minutemen battled the weather at the start of September to get their season started, it did not seem to negatively impact their play. On Saturday, September 9th, Newark Academy hosted their annual invitational tournament and topped Montgomery in the first round. Rain delays caused the team to reschedule the final round against Holy Angels to a date that is to be determined.
The Minutemen kept the momentum heading into regular season matches by shutting out two top-ten teams in the state. Their first was a 5-0 win over #4 Millburn. Lily Schonbraun (First Singles) and Ayanna Varma (Second Singles) both won in two sets. Joanna Yu (Third Singles), Sarah Wang and Siyona Bordia (First Doubles) and Molly Egan and Maddy Kayyali (Second Doubles) all won in tie-breakers to seal the 5-0 win.
Newark Academy had little time to recover as the were headed to Livingston the next day. Lily Schonbraun (First Singles) and Ayanna Varma (Second Singles) started the Minutemen strong with commanding victories. Maddy Kayyali (Third Singles) won in a third-set tie breaker. Siyonna Bordia and Sarah Wang (First Doubles) and Molly Egan and Kayra Aran (Second Doubles), won in two sets to bring Newark Academy to a 5-0 finish over the Lancers.
The Minutemen are looking to continue with their success as they head into the remainder of their season.
