The Newark Academy varsity girls' basketball team had a standout season last year, finishing with an impressive 21-6 record and the Prep B Championship title. The team also made a strong showing in the Essex County Tournament, reaching the quarterfinals. Led by Head Coach Liz Bona, who is entering her 18th year at the helm, the team looks to build on last season’s success.

Major Losses:
The graduation of captain Zoe Hermans '23, a Second Team Prep B, Second Team All-Super Essex Conference (SEC) Liberty Division and Seventh Team Sideline Chatter selection, is a loss for the team.

Key Returners:
The Minutemen return a strong roster of talented players that will help navigate the loss of Zoe. Kat Dakos '24, a First Team All-SEC Liberty Division and First Team All-Prep B player, promises to be a pivotal force on the court. Alongside her is Dagny Slomack '24, who earned First Team All-SEC Liberty and First Team All-Prep B honors. Both players also received recognition from Sideline Chatter. Gracie Kelly '25 and Sienna Murphy '25, both Honorable Mention All-SEC Liberty Division players, bring their own unique strengths to the team.

Looking Ahead:
Due to last season’s success in the Liberty division, the team has moved up a division and will now compete in the SEC American division against Immaculate, University, West Orange, Columbia, Caldwell and Mount Saint Dominic.

Save the Date:
Newark Academy will take the court at home on Thursday, December 14, against Columbia at 4 p.m. for their season opener.
