Newark Academy Boys’ and Girls' Swimming Look to Defend Championship Titles

BOYS' SWIMMING
Newark Academy varsity boys’ swimming is ready to dive into the new season. Coming off a spectacular 9-2 year that culminated with State and Prep Championship titles, the Minutemen are setting their sights on yet another banner year in the pool.

Guiding this team is the seasoned Head Coach Billy Blomn who enters his 25th season at the helm. Coach Blomn, the 2021 NJ.com Boys’ Coach of the Year, is no stranger to success. Throughout his career, the team has secured one Sectional title, two State titles and two Prep Championship titles.

Major Losses:
The graduation of captains and All-SEC postseason honorees Will Crall ‘23, Ian Bell ‘23 and Will Wong ‘23 will leave an opportunity for returners and newcomers alike to step up and make their mark.

Key Returners:
Key returner, Owen Markowitz ‘24 (captain and All-Super Essex Conference (SEC) First Team 500 Freestyle, Second Team 200 Medley Relay, Second Team 400 Freestyle Relay and NJ.com All-State Third Team 500 Freestyle) looks to lead the team to more success. Joining him is Jasper Schnieders-Smith ‘24 (captain and All-SEC Honorable Mention), Brett Matlosz ‘25 (All-SEC Second Team 200 Medley Relay) and Brody Linenburg ‘25 (All-SEC Second Team 400 Freestyle Relay).

Looking Ahead:
In the upcoming season, the Minutemen will swim in the SEC American division, going head-to-head against Montclair, Seton Hall Prep, Livingston, Millburn, Caldwell and Columbia.

The season opener is set for Thursday, December 7, at home against Verona at 4 p.m.

GIRLS' SWIMMING:
Newark Academy varsity girls’ swimming is ready to get back in the pool after a phenomenal 2022-23 season. With a record of 9-2, which included the Prep Championship title and a visit to the State Group championship, the Minutemen are hoping to win back the State title they previously clinched in 2022. Head Coach Billy Blomn, entering his 25th season with the program, has, over the course of his coaching career, led the team to conference, county, state, and prep titles and hopes to continue this success.

Major Losses:
The graduation of captains and All-Super Essex Conference (SEC) honorees Aakriti Caprihan ‘23, Dina Drogin ‘23, and Lauren Siegel ‘23 will leave the Minutemen with big shoes to fill.

Key Returners:
Key returners that will help navigate the loss of recent graduates include Laura Kim ‘25 (First Team All-SEC 200 Individual Medley, First Team All-SEC Freestyle Relay and Second Team All-SEC 200 Medley Relay). Joining her are Claire Wong ‘25 (First Team All-SEC 200 Freestyle Relay, Second Team All-SEC 200 Medley Relay and Second Team All-SEC 100 Backstroke), Phoebe Kaplan ‘25 (First Team All-SEC 200 Freestyle Relay, Second Team All-SEC 200 Medley Relay and Second Team All-SEC 200 Individual Relay), and Meghan Lai ‘24 (First Team All-SEC Freestyle Relay).

Looking Ahead:
The captains for this season are seniors Meghan, Julie Zheng and Alyssa Lee. In the upcoming season, the team will compete in the SEC American division against rivals Montclair, Mount Saint Dominic, Livingston, Millburn, Caldwell and Columbia.
